My hand drawn rendering of Alice Walker at 8 years old, was shot in the right eye with a BB pellet while playing with two of her brothers, and she became self-conscious of this visible mark. Later Alice became a writer and feminist, and social activist. Her work is focused on the struggles of black people, particularly women, and their lives in a racist, sexist, and violent society. Her writing offers great insight into the African American culture. In 1982 she wrote the book Color Purple, after which she became the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
